A machine that cuts trees with a laser. Even the carpenters were shocked.

 Those laser cutters look remarkably like saw blades.  The laser is used to set the advancement of the carriage there by determining the thickness of the slab being removed from the log. The actual cutting was being done by a band saw blade. It cuts in both directions as the carriage moves forward and another plank is cut from the log as the carriage moves backwards.
