If you think Engineering is cool, you'll love to see the most extreme mega structures being made. Here's some extreme engineering!
There's actually one of those giant drills in my city in Australia. They actually used 2 to build an express way right through the city. After it was done they couldn't figure out how to get one of them back through the city. So they took it to a mountain close by and had it drill straight in and buried it. I reckon that bunker would be an excellent evil villain lair.
Luckily this actually paid off, since they pulled the drill out of retirement to work on a new project in the city. Whether they send it back to the bunker or finally get it out of the city, only time will tell. Having worked on many high rise buildings myself I can testify the Tower Cranes are truly an engineering marvel... Three of us came up with the brilliant idea during lunch breaks of building a tower crane that could lift itself if located in the center of the project... Turned out the Chinese already had one in use.... sad faces. For some really impressive lifting, take a look at the "Sleipnir" crane vessel, lifts 20.000t or the Pioneering Spirit, lifts 48.000t offshore structures. 1:47 Tunnels built with such a giant drill aren’t always build beneath cities, in The Netherlands, a highspeed train track has such a tunnel from Leiderdorp to Hazerswoude-Drop, to avoid noise in the protected nature area where many birds breed above. The length of this tunnel is more than 7 KM long. I was working on the Aasta Hansteen project, it was an an amazing piece of construction. And if you want to see some crazy big machinery, take a look at Saipem 7000 and SSCV Thialf :)
