There's something a bit sad seeing these ships make their last voyage. Surprising how little damage these ships seem to suffer. There hardly appears to be a dent in their bows. The thing about running a big ship onto the beach for scrapping is there is no second chance, they are coming in under full power and with no ballast so they don't steer normally and they are slotting them into a very narrow gap. Nice jobs all 5 of them. For every ships captain, for everyone who ever worked on any sort of ship this are very sad images. There is no accident here, this is precision beaching of ships to be dismantled. At this point the crew leaves the ship never to come back. I love watching the people standing on shore, getting as close as possible to a behemoth beaching itself. Then running away from the ankle deep wave!! The white cruise ship looked like it was in very good shape for a ship that is about to be cur up for scrap. I have to wonder what the problem was with it that the owners would scrap it.
This always completely floors me! HOW can a huge ship miscalculate so badly as to crash into anything Know the geography where you're going; know the weather, winds, tides, depths, eddies, and the possible idiosyncrasies of each and every place you go and how to handle them BEFORE you get there, which WILL preclude silly, embarrassing accidents! And most of all, know HOW TO CONTROL your ship's speed, etc. to prevent such incidents!
When these ships are beached, the vent the air system. This not only prevents the air tanks from bursting when workers enter the craft, it also gives the ship one last hurrah out of dignity and respect as she screams her way into the yard, asserting her dominance until the very last moment.
